Tips For Ensuring High Internet Speeds When Using Wi-Fi At Home

Blog

In this day and age, having a fast high speed Internet connection is essential. The Internet has become a daily part of people's life, whether it is used for surfing the web, streaming movies, or online gaming. Since the Internet is used so often by so many households, a fast and reliable Wi-Fi connection is something that most people want. Use the following tips to ensure high Internet speeds when connected to Wi-Fi:

Find the Best Spot for your Router

One of the keys to the fastest Internet connection possible when using Wi-Fi is the position of your router. Never hide your router in a drawer or cabinet-- the signal will be strongest when it is out in the open, preferably on a raised surface like a shelf or desktop. It is also important to keep the antennas perpendicular at all time to increase the range of the Wi-Fi signal. If possible, try to position your router in the middle of your home so you have fast Internet speeds using Wi-Fi in all of the rooms in the house.

Keep Your Router Secure

The more people accessing your Wi-Fi, the slower your Internet speeds will be. One way to prevent your Wi-Fi from being used by close neighbors or people in the vicinity of your home is by protecting your router and Wi-Fi connection with a password. This will help ensure that your family are the only people using your bandwidth, so your Internet speeds will be as fast as possible. In addition to boosting Internet speeds, protecting your router and Wi-Fi connection can also protect sensitive information on your computer and wireless devices.

Set Up Quality of Service Rules

Some applications, like video chat or online gaming can hog Wi-Fi bandwidth and prevent other applications from running as fast as they should when online. An easy way to ensure that priority applications have a fast Internet connection when using Wi-Fi is by setting up Quality of Service (QoS) rules for your router. This is easy to do via your router's software and will help ensure that Wi-Fi signals are supporting the applications that the head of household finds most important.

Reboot Your Router

It is not uncommon for a router to become slow when it has been running continuously for a very long time. An easy way to fix this problem is by simply rebooting the router. Make sure you create a schedule and reboot your router on a regular basis to help keep your Wi-Fi Internet speeds fast.

Don't Be Afraid to Change Your Internet Package

I recently switched my internet service provider. Once I switched, I was very happy with the speed and service. The internet moved so fast for me that I was on it playing games and messaging friends a lot more than usual. What I forgot was that I chose my internet package based on my past monthly use of the internet, which was low simply because our old service was so slow I didn't like using it much. I chose a package that was limited, and I realized my mistake when I used up all my plan data in just two weeks. Thankfully, my new provider allowed me to switch to unlimited mid-month. I created this blog to remind others to always keep an eye on their internet usage if on a restricted plan and call your provider if you need to change it.
